Let’s Bring the Milky Way Home

How many of you have recently seen fireflies or the Milky Way? While we cannot track exactly how many people have missed out on fireflies,
global dark-sky data reveals a shocking reality: nearly 80% of North
Americans can no longer see the Milky Way due to artificial skyglow.

The fading of our stars is not just a cosmetic change. It is the physical erasure of the natural environment that shaped all life on Earth.

Why Care?

Ecosystem Collapse

Over 80% of animal species are nocturnal.
Artificial light disrupts their biological clocks, disorients migratory birds, and ruins the flashing "language" fireflies use to mate.

Why Care?

Threats to Human Health

Nighttime light suppresses critical melatonin production, disrupting our circadian rhythms and raising the risk of chronic diseases.

Why Care?

Loss of Lifesaving Medicine

More than 50% of modern medicines originate from natural organisms. As biodiversity declines and ecosystems weaken, we permanently lose undiscovered compounds that could cure diseases.

If we waste money on electricity, we can recover financially. If our sleep is disrupted, we can buy blackout curtains. But once a wildlife species is driven to extinction by light disorientation, it is gone
forever.

Humans simply cannot exist outside of a functioning ecosystem.

The Good News: Its Isnt Too Late!

Light pollution is one of the only environmental crises we can reverse
overnight
. By making simple changes at home, like shielding your outdoor
lights, you can save energy, improve your home security, and protect
wildlife:

1. Shield Your Fixtures: Use
fully shielded, downward-facing porch lights that point directly at the
ground, keeping light out of the sky and away from your neighbors'
bedroom windows.

2. Swap Your Bulbs: Use
warm amber LED bulbs (under 2700 Kelvin). Bright white bulbs cause
blinding glare and confuse nocturnal animals, while amber light keeps
your pathways safe without harming the ecosystem.

Responsible lighting isn’t about making our community darker. It’s about putting light where it’s needed and keeping it out of our skies, our neighbors’ windows, and our natural environment

Let us all do our part in safeguarding the nocturnal animals and birds that keep our planet thriving. Let’s clear the night skies so our children and grandchildren can experience the wonder of fireflies and the Milky Way.

Better lighting. Safer streets. Lower energy costs. Brighter stars. Healthier homes.

Let’s bring the Milky Way home.
